What Are The Various Migraine Headache Causes?

May 10th, 2009

There are four things you should look at when looking for migraine headaches causes. The first is food sensitivities, which means you’ll have to do a little research to find the foods you are sensitive to. The second is environmental factors, such as the air or smells. Stress is a huge cause of migraines. You ought to have a system for dealing with stress if you don’t already have one. Your physical health, or lack of it, can also cause migraines.

Are You Sensitive To Foods?

Something you are eating could be the cause of your headaches. Common foods are dairy products, artificial sweeteners, chocolate, alcohol, processed meat products (lunch meat, hot dogs), caffeine, and most fatty foods.

There are a few ways to investigate your migraine headache causes.  A doctor may suggest omitting the suspect food from the person’s diet for a set amount of time or keeping a food and headache diary, recording what foods the person eats and which of those days headaches occur to try to establish a pattern.

Is It Something In Your Environment

Your migraine headache causes may be triggers in your environment.  There are many external migraine headache causes which people cannot always avoid, these people may be able to take some precautions such as wearing sun glasses or taking an over the counter motion sickness medication if the nausea leads to headaches when traveling.

Are You Not Properly Dealing With Stress?

Stress is one of the greatest migraine headache causes. Many people have anxiety from situations in the work place, at home, with family, and many other situations which lead to severe headaches.

Depression is another of the migraine headache causes; when people suffer from depression they tend to use extra stimulants such as coffee or nicotine to compensate for their moods which can also cause migraine headaches.  Some people also tend to consume alcohol when they are depressed to cope with their feelings. An excess of alcohol is also a known cause of migraine headaches.

Is It Something Physical

Poor sleep is a common cause of migraine headaches. Every person’s body requires a unique amount of sleep, for most people that is between six and nine hours each night.  When a person has trouble sleeping it can affect their whole next day by plaguing them with severe head pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light or sound.

Something else you want to be careful of, believe it or not, is not to get too much sleep.  Most people thrive on sleeping for a set amount of time each day waking and sleeping at the same times, for some migraine headache sufferers regulating their sleeping pattern could reduce their occurrence of headaches immensely.

You should never think that you just have to live with migraine headaches. It is very likely that your headaches are being caused by something you are doing, whether it is not dealing with stress as you should, or not sleeping well. What you should not do is just rely on medication to deal with migraines. Meds are fine to manage the pain only while you are striving to find your migraine headache causes.

Does a Caffeine Headache Bother You Every Morning?

May 10th, 2009

I have suffered from several caffeine headaches because I drink a lot of caffeine through out the day. In fact, I had quite a caffeine withdrawal headache this morning because I slept until eleven. I usually wake up at seven in the morning, but the Red Sox are playing in Arizona this weekend and the games don’t start until ten at night. I got to bed late and therefore woke up late. My head was pounding from a caffeine headache and I knew immediately that I had to get some coffee inside of me. Read the rest of this entry »

What Causes a Neck Spasm Headache?

May 10th, 2009

The most common type of headache is a tension headache. It is also know as a muscle contraction headache. These neck spasm headaches are the result of tense muscles or spasms in the neck and shoulders. It is no wonder that these headaches are the most common. We live in a fast-paced society with high-stressed jobs, little exercise and poor diets.

Several studies have been conducted on tension headaches. One study found that many tension headache sufferers experience them once a week. Even though they are common, doctors find them difficult to diagnose and treat. There are however several ways that a neck spasm headache can be treated. You will want to familiarize yourself with them and decide which one most suits your way of thinking.

Neck Spasm Headache – What’s the Cause?

The pain felt in a neck spasm headache is the result of muscle spasms in the neck and shoulders aggravating the nerves in the base of the head. This causes pain at the base of the head and the scalp. What causes you to have muscle spasms? One cause is having been rear ended by another vehicle.

This is one of the more intense causes of a muscle spasm. Such an accident places a large amount of force on the neck, and the muscles located in the neck tighten in response to the pressure. The neck muscles can remain in spasm long after other injuries have healed, and this is why a neck spasm headache resulting from a car accident many become chronic. Less serious causes of the muscle spasms in the neck that could lead to a neck spasm headache include situations where the neck or spine may be held in one position for too long, such as when you sleep in a chair, work at a computer, or drive for a long period of time.

Treatment of a Neck Spasm Headache

The neck spasm headache sufferer has a variety of choices for treatment. Many have found that acupuncture is extremely successful because it seems to reduce or eliminate the spasms. Another treatment is manipulative therapy. This involves stretching the muscles very quickly to get them back to normal. Another approach is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). These remedies are very popular with those who prefer not to take medications.

Common Headache Types That Many Suffer From

May 10th, 2009

Most of us have suffered from headaches, including some babies, and young children. But most of us don’t know exactly what kind of headache is bothering us, even though the pain really strikes us down sometimes. This is really a problem because we without knowing what the headache types are, we won’t know the best therapy for us or we might use the wrong medicine. So what kind of headache you have is kind of important—– tension headaches, migraine headaches, cluster headaches or organic headaches, etc.

There Are Many Headache Treatment Options

Nevertheless, the medical fraternity has not spared any effort in coming up with methods and cures to relieve headaches whatever is their type. The latest medications that are used in conjunction with therapies that do not require taking drugs can help to prevent, stop or even manage headaches ranging from the mild to the toughest types.

Perhaps the most common headache type that everyone has suffered at some point of time or the other in their lives is the tension-type headache for which over-the-counter medications are used to treat such a condition. No doubt this is a very common headache type, but it can be severe enough to debilitate a person and it may be either episodic, or chronic.

Another severe instance of a headache type is the migraine headache that can cause a person to go into a state where they are unable to continue with their daily routines for a few hours, or even for a few days. Migraine headaches are a leading cause why people absent themselves from work and cause disruptions in family life. It is believed that almost thirty million Americans have suffered from migraines and almost four fifths have had a history of migraine headaches in their families, though it is yet to determine whether genes actually play any role in such a headache type.

The third headache type we know is the cluster headache that affects a person in groups of attacks often without a warning, and this is the severest as well as most intense of all headache types. Cluster headaches can last for a half hour to forty-five minutes, though some may last for many hours before finally disappearing only to return later on, and it is quite normal for a person to get up to four such headaches in a day which most often appear in the mornings, or come late in the nighttime and lasts weeks or even months

There are other headache types which seem to only afflict a special group of people, like hormone headaches which only affects women when there hormone levels are changing; or like headaches from your disobeying the instructions on the medication labels or recommendations from the physician or overdosing on caffeine. Or like organic headaches which usually are triggered by the disease of the brain, nose or other organs.
